Local Government Council is so important to the people because it is regarded as the government that is closer to the people.
No wonder the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognises the Local Government as the third tier of government.
The vibrancy of the Local Government is also dear to the people, as many Nigerians depend much on the Local Government.
In the past, the Local Government played a vital role in the building of Motor Parks and Markets, provision of social amenities, construction of rural roads, provision of pipe bore water, electricity and Health Centres among others.
Regrettably, many leaders of the Local Government Areas recently have not been fulfilling these constitutional obligations due to lack of funds.
The present administration in Abia State under Governor Alex Otti had on assumption of office on May, 29th 2023, taken steps to revive the local government system in the state through the appointment of Mayors, consisting of people with experience and business acumen to give the Local Government a better facelift.
Today, the decision of the Governor has yielded results in the Seventeen Local Government Areas of the state with numerous projects executed by the outgoing Mayors.
The evidence is so clear that the present administration in Abia, has within the past seventeen months prioritized the development of the state through the provision of access road network, and other infrastructures that have eluded the state in the past.
The newly inaugurated Local Government Area Chairmen should therefore as a matter of urgency, emulate the good steps the Governor has taken so far, in not just only rebranding the image of the state but also in putting in critical infrastructure and conducive environment to enhance business by replicating same in their respective Local Government Areas.
The truth is that the expectation is very high and the newly inaugurated Local Government Areas Chairmen, their Deputies and Councillors should work in harmony and initiate programs and policies that will enhance democracy at the grassroot.
There is no gain saying the fact that a lot of communities at the grassroot lack good road network, electricity, pipe bore water among others. It is therefore pertinent that the newly inaugurated Local Government Areas Chairmen should go into action in providing these infrastructure for the comfort of the rural dwellers.
With the judgement of the Supreme Court, Local Government Council are expected to receive their allocations directly as the old way of Joint Allocations is no longer envogue.
To this end, the people expect a Local Government that will be alive to their responsibility of building more markets, motor Parks and Health Centres as well as ensure the securing of the lives and property of the people.
Also, the role of the traditional rulers cannot be overemphasized in ensuring peace and order in the Local Governments and the new Locals Government Chairmen should equally carry the traditional rulers along in the governance of the Local Government to ensure sustained peace, security of lives and property and prosperity for all.
