The state government has made it an offence for any parent in Abia that fails to send their wards to school starting from January 2025 in line with the Abia state Child’s right law of 2006.

The Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu who disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting Presided over by Governor Alex Otti, said the state government has declared tuition free education from primary to Junior Secondary school in the state and that no parents now has any reason not send his ward to school.

Prince kanu noted that the policy is part of the ongoing reforms in the education sector and in fulfilment of the state of emergency declared on assumption of office by the Governor in the education sector.

The Information Commissioner said that government is not going back on the relocation order of Umuahia Campus of ABSU back to the main campus in Uturu, adding that the state government being a listening one has resolved to engage all affected stakeholders in the course of implementing the policy.

He said that government took the decision in the best interest and well-being of the University especially the Students and stakeholders.

On the new minimum wage, Prince kanu said that the administration of Governor Alex Otti being a listening one is open to further engagements with the organized labour following the commencement of the implementation of the wage last month.

He assured that that all issues arising from implementation of the new minimum wage that requires further attention from government would be fully attended to, urging the organized labour to leverage on the available channels made available by Government.

Prince kanu equally announced that the executive council has granted approval for the award of contracts for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of nine new roads scattered across the 3 senatorial zones of the state, assuring that details of the roads would be made available to the public soon.

On the failing Osisioma flyover, the information Commissioner said that Governor Alex Otti has directed the Commissioner for works to commence repair work on the flyover without further delay to safeguard the lives of Abians and other road Users.
