UMUAHIA – The Abia State government has begun clearing materials obstructing the major gutter that runs through the state capital and other streets in Umuahia.
Speaking while overseeing the project, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, explained that the goal of the exercise is to restore proper drainage and safeguard public health.
Mr. Agomoh noted that many of the drains had not been cleaned over the years, and the main gutter had been blocked by waste dumped by residents.
He commended the current administration in Abia State under Governor Alex Otti for successfully removing the debris obstructing the large gutter, highlighting the government’s commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier environment for the people.
He urged the public, especially those living near the big gutter and streets like Obowo, Asaba, Awolowo, Eket, and Aba Road Timber, to refrain from dumping waste in the gutters and to support government efforts in maintaining a clean environment.
The UCDA General Manager also emphasized that Governor Dr. Alex Otti is determined to ensure that the people of Abia State benefit from democratic progress, a vision his administration is actively working towards.
Mr. Agomoh further expressed maximum satisfaction over the contractor’s performance in handling the de-silting operation.
In their responses, some of the residents of Obowo and Asaba streets, including Mr. Daniel Onwuegbochi and Mr. Okwudiri Nwaiwu, expressed their appreciation for Governor Alex Otti’s initiative, noting that this is the first time they have seen such a transformative project in their area.
