Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi has been elected as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) after defeating two contenders, Comrade Garba Muhammed and Comrade Dele Atumbi.

Announcing the election results during the NUJ 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State, the Imo State NLC Chairman, Comrade Uchechigaemezu Nwigwe, disclosed that the winner, Comrade Alhassan, pulled a total of 436 votes to defeat Comrade Atumbi, who got 97 votes, and Comrade Garba Muhammed, who received 39 votes.

Comrade Nwigwe, while expressing maximum satisfaction over the electoral process, which he described as free, fair, and credible, commended the delegates for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner throughout the exercise.

In his valedictory and handover speech, the outgone President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Chief Chris Isiguzo, while giving his scorecard over the past six years of his tenure, noted that the significant impact of his leadership was made possible by the tremendous support and commitment of the union’s members in advancing its cause.

Chief Isiguzo thanked the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, and the NUJ local organizing committee for their continued support towards the successful hosting of the conference in Imo State, and urged his successor to be magnanimous in victory and ensure he makes honesty, transparency, and accountability his watchwords.

In his victory and acceptance speech, the newly elected President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, who was visibly overwhelmed with joy, thanked the NUJ delegates drawn from across the six geopolitical zones of the nation for entrusting him with their mandate for the next three years. He also promised to run an inclusive government.

Others elected include Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde as Deputy President, Comrade Victor Ndukwe of the BCA Chapel as National Treasurer, Comrade Samuel Dada as National Financial Secretary, Comrade Adinku Ezenwa as Secretary for Zone C, among others.
