The Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has emphasized the need for all hands to be on deck to rebuild the education sector, ensuring it takes its rightful place in national development.

Mr. Obi, in his keynote address at the 50th Anniversary and 2024 Old Boys Homecoming and Annual General Meeting of the Class of 1974, Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association, held at the College Assembly Hall, expressed regret that many schools that produced prominent figures in society are now in deplorable conditions. He urged everyone to invest in the education sector.

A former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Obi highlighted that investing in education and proper planning are key to revitalizing the sector. He also pledged to support the Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association in realizing their proposed Sports Center Project for the college.

Dr. Chinedum Ahaiwe, the National President of the Government College Old Boys Association, noted that the annual event provides an opportunity to review the Association’s activities and strategize for the future. He also commended Governor Dr. Alex Otti for his support in helping the Association reclaim their land, which had previously been encroached upon by individuals.

Dr. Ahaiwe further stated that the Old Boys Association is working hard to restore the values and traditions that once made Government College Umuahia one of the best schools in Africa. He also announced that the college is set to conduct its first Junior Secondary School Examination next year after officially taking over the college from the state government.

Pioneers of the Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association, Nze Onyewenyi and Dr. Eugene Ibe, expressed the Association’s commitment to the vision of the college’s founding fathers, describing the Homecoming and Annual General Meeting as a way of giving back to their alma mater.

In their remarks, the Captain of the Class of 1974, Dr. Ogwo Ojum, and the Chairman of the 2024 Homecoming Ceremony, Sir Kelechi Ibiam, highlighted that the event, which also included the unveiling of a new school bus donated by the Association to the college, was a way of showing appreciation for the impact the school had on their lives and supporting its continued success.

The event featured goodwill messages and a match parade by the students of Government College Umuahia.
