The Abia State Government says it has observed with dismay that certain misguided individuals still engage in burning of tyres on the roads despite several warnings not to engage in such.

In a release signed by the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, government wishes to remind members of the public that the prohibition of burning of tyres on roads whether Federal or state owned, is still in force.

The Abia State Government notes that burning of tyres cause significant damage to the newly constructed and rehabilitated roads across the state and contributes to environmental degradation as well as poses health risks to residents.

The State government directs security agencies and relevant authorities to monitor compliance with this directive across the Seventeen Local Government Areas of the state adding that individuals or groups found violating the order will face prosecution as stipulated under the law.

It advises Parents to warn their wards and children to avoid “had I known”.

Government urges Abia citizens and residents to celebrate the New Year in a responsible and peaceful manner, embracing activities that promote safety, healthy living, communal harmony, unity and the development of the state.
