Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to focus on contributing to the development of the state rather than seeking relocation.

Speaking at the 2024 Batch C Stream II swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC orientation camp in Umunna, Bende LGA, Gov. Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, emphasized that the “New Abia” prioritizes a sense of responsibility over entitlement.

He encouraged the corps members to embrace all training and instructions with an open mind, aiming to acquire valuable skills that would contribute to the state’s growth as they begin their orientation course.

“As Corps Members deployed to the state, you are now part of Abia’s youth population. We will treat you with the same genuine affection that has earned us the admiration of our people. While we will be very accommodating throughout your service year, we expect you to reciprocate by offering your best and serving with dedication and skill,” Gov. Otti said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development and Chairman of the NYSC State Governing Board, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, highlighted the significant investment made by the Otti administration into the NYSC program.

He stressed that Gov. Otti deeply believes in the potential of Nigerian youth and is committed to ensuring that Abia Corps members stand out nationally. He urged the corps members to serve with selflessness and commitment in their host communities after the orientation.

In her remarks, the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Barr. Mrs. Gladys Adama, noted that the scheme’s first objective is to prepare corps members for nation-building.

She outlined camp activities, including paramilitary drills, lectures, skills acquisition, sports, and social events, all designed to equip the corps members for the year ahead and beyond.

Mrs. Adama also expressed her gratitude to Gov. Otti for his support, particularly for the funds released to the Ministry of Lands and Housing to renovate the orientation camp, aiming to make it one of the best in the country.
