Abia State Government says it will enforce full participation of all in the state-wide monthly sanitation exercises across the seventeen Local Government Areas of the state.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, who disclosed this while monitoring yesterday’s monthly sanitation exercise in Umuahia Metropolis, acknowledged the successes that have been recorded in the sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner explained that the present administration has shown commitment to the cleanliness of the state, as evidenced by the significant improvement in waste management within the past 20 months of the present administration.

Mr. Ogbonna said that sensitization and compliance in all nooks and crannies of the state are necessary to ensure that all Abians internalize the exercise and see it as their responsibility to make their environment clean at all times.

The Commissioner who was accompanied by the chairman State House of Assembly Committee on Environment Mr. Mba Nwoke, Deputy General Manager ASEPA Umuahia Zone Mr. Ambrose Jonah and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, while sensitizing traders of Ahia Ukwu Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA and Orieugba Market in Umuahia North LGA stressed the need for them clean the markets on the last Friday of the month and to stay in their house to observe the sanitation exercise which ends at 10am before they open their shops for business.

The Environment Commissioner emphasized the need for all to join hands with the Government to make Abia’ the most cleanliness in the country.
Also speaking the Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Mr. Mba Nwoke and Deputy General Manager of ASEPA Umuahia Zone, Mr. Ambrose Jonah while enumerating the benefit of a clean environment, noted that the administration of Dr. Alex Otti is passionate about the environmental cleanliness of all parts of the state, and called on Abians to support him, by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of waste, as well as participating actively in the monthly sanitation exercises.

Our correspondent reports that 44 defaulters were arrested and arraigned before sanitation court.
