Abia State Government says it will continue to Partner Carter Centre in fighting against some tropical Diseases in the state.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. Ifeanyinwa Uma Kalu who disclosed this in a press Conference to commemorate the 2025 World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day in her office, said that the day is set aside to create awareness on the dangers of tropical diseases and how to identify them, like Elephantiasis, River Blindness, hydrozine among others.
The Permanent Secretary revealed that Abia State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Carter Centre has been working assiduously through enlightenment campaigns in schools, markets and rural communities with a view to identifying people with such cases.
She added that NTDS team in the state has been able to identity over forty-three men above the age of eighteen years who indicate having hydrosin and fifty-seven persons with cases of Elephantiasis revealing that talks are on-going with the Commissioner for Health to schedule them for surgeries.
She added that two hospitals have been earmarked, one for Abia North and one for Abia South pointing out that Nkporo Cottage Hospital would be used for Abia North and SDG Multi-Purpose Hospital Ugwanagbo.
Meanwhile, there will be a road work tomorrow Thursday in the streets of Umuahia to commemorate the day as well as create awareness on the need for people to speak up and identify with public Health and Disease Control Unit, Ministry of Health for administration of medication and surgery where necessary.
