The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially flagged-off the reconstruction, dualization, and expansion of the 5.5km Umuikaa-Owerrinta Federal Highway.

Speaking at the event held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Primary School, in Umuikaa, Isialangwa South LGA, Governor Otti emphasized that while the highway is federally owned, the road development is a priority for his administration, acknowledging its significance for the state.

He expressed gratitude to the federal government for granting permission for the state to proceed with the project and highlighted that upon completion, the enhanced highway will offer a smoother and more welcoming experience for travelers entering Abia from neighboring states of Imo and Anambra.

Governor Otti pointed out that his administration is committed to not only building top-tier infrastructure but also improving the state’s entry points by clearing waste and other hazards.

The Governor further explained that the road project is more than an aesthetic improvement, as it will be a lifesaving initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion and accidents, especially for motorists rushing to catch their flights at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport. Additionally, he revealed plans for the upcoming Abia Medical City along the route.

The State Chief Executive also announced that once completed, the road will contribute significantly to the Southeast’s economic integration by facilitating seamless interstate trade and transport.

He encouraged investors to seize the opportunities created by this improved infrastructure, noting that the state is focusing on investments in real estate, agriculture, retail, and logistics.

In his address, the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, while emphasizing the vital role of the highway as the western gateway to Abia, disclosed that the project, once completed, will enhance the region’s industrial and economic potential, benefiting local communities significantly.

Also speaking, some of the key stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa South LGA including Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, and Dr. Gerson Amuta, commended Governor Otti’s unprecedented commitment to infrastructural development in Isialangwa South, adding that the LGA has not seen such projects since its creation.

In their remarks, the Member representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency, Chief Roland Chinwendu, the Mayor of Isialangwa South LGA, Mr. Chiedozie Nwaogwugwu, Chief Dannie Ubani, and the First Deputy Chairman of the Abia State Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Nelson Nmerengwa, lauded Governor Otti’s ongoing projects across all 17 LGAs, describing his leadership and vision for the state as unprecedented.

The project is slated for completion within 18 months. The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba among other top government officials witnessed the flag-off ceremony.
