The Abia State Government has taken delivery of mentally healthcare related drugs donated by the Nigerian-American Institute for Mental Health (NAIMAH).

Speaking while receiving the cartons of drugs in his office, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya described mental health care as a critical aspect of healthcare that the present administration is giving serious attention for improved well-being of the people and society.

Professor Ogbonnaya who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ifenyiwa Uma-Kalu assured that the Ministry will partner the Association in educating the rural dwellers on mental health services and Psycho-education.

The Commissioner said because of the importance the present administration attaches to health sector, the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti allocated fifteen percent State Budget allocation to healthcare sector, while Government has commenced the renovation of two hundred primary health centers and five General Hospitals, as well as redesigning of Abia State Teaching Hospital Aba to a world class standard.

In his Speech, The President Nigerian-American Institute For Mental Health Limited, Dr Azubuike Aliche, represented by a Member of the Association, Justice Nwogu, said the Association is committed to creating programs and services in addressing issues of mental illness, and commended the Governor for his commitment towards the health care needs of Abians.

Also Speaking, Chairman Abians in Diaspora Commission, Mr. Allwell Agbara, represented by the Head of Administration of the Commission, Elder Chiemela Adiele-Ulelu, said the essence of the donation was to complement the efforts of Dr. Otti in the sector, and thanked the Association for the donation.
