The Governor also commissioned a 150KVA solar power system with 430-kilowatt battery storage at the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Center in Umuahia.

Speaking during the launch in Umuahia, Governor Otti described the Abia Integrated WASH Accelerated Program as a significant step toward eliminating open defecation and improving sanitation. He noted that the project will be implemented in 10 locations across the state.

He emphasized that the project aligns with his administration’s commitment to enhancing environmental hygiene and is powered by a reliable, renewable solar energy system.

Governor Otti expressed satisfaction with the successful installation of the 150KVA solar power and 430-kilowatt battery storage at the Specialist and Diagnostic Center, noting that the renewable energy system will serve as a primary power source for the facility.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, described the project as a pilot scheme. He revealed that both the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation had inspected the facility and recommended some modifications for future rollouts.

Mr. Monday also explained that the WASH facility was designed with accessibility in mind, including features for persons with disabilities. He added that the project supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 and includes six toilets and two washrooms—entirely powered by solar energy.

He further stated that the solar installation includes a 100KVA inverter system to power the Eye and Pediatrics Clinics, as well as a 50KVA unit dedicated to the surgical theatre for emergency services.

The events were witnessed by a delegation from the World Bank and top government officials.
