All is now set for the 2nd edition of the Abia State Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games, scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, July 29 and run through August 1, 2025.

Speaking while addressing journalists at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, said that Governor Alex Otti initiated the statewide sporting activity to discover football talents and revive grassroots sports development.

Sir Ananaba disclosed that the competition is designed to support physical and inter-school sports activities introduced by the State Government to enhance students’ academic performance and ensure Abia students remain meaningfully engaged.

The state Sports Commissioner noted that the competition, which initially commenced at various secondary school levels across the 17 Local Government Areas, will culminate in selecting the best team to represent the state at the National Secondary Schools Football Competition.

He announced that the participating teams will converge in Umuahia for the final stages of the football competition, adding that Governor Otti has made adequate provisions and logistical arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.

Also speaking, the State Director of Sports, Comrade George Obioma, the Chairman, Publicity Sub-Committee of the Abia State Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games, Mr. Francis Nwaubani and his Sanitation Sub-Committee counterpart, Comrade Hyacinth Ezindu, described the football competition as a testament to the Governor’s unwavering commitment to grassroots sports development.

They urged all participating teams to take the competition seriously and aim to win laurels for their schools and communities.
