ABIA – Governor Alex Otti has said governments must prioritise policies that deliver tangible development rather than pursue economic strategies that fail to improve the living standards of citizens.
Governor Otti stated this while receiving the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Professor James Robinson, and a delegation of distinguished academics from universities in the United States, led by former Minister of Education and Health, Professor Ihechukwu Madubuike, at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
The Governor described development economics as the most significant branch of the discipline because it addresses the fundamental issues affecting people’s welfare.
Congratulating Professor Robinson on winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, Governor Otti said it was a privilege to finally meet the renowned development economist, whose work he had long admired and followed.
A first-class graduate of Economics from the University of Port Harcourt, Governor Otti observed that the long-held assumption that economic growth automatically translates into development no longer reflects reality.
He explained that his administration deliberately evaluates policies based on their capacity to reduce poverty, improve productivity and enhance the quality of life of the people, rather than merely boosting economic indicators.
The Governor further noted that creating an enabling environment for businesses and investment alone is insufficient unless citizens possess the skills and capacity to take advantage of available opportunities. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with Professor Robinson on research, policy development and knowledge exchange, subject to the economist’s availability.
Earlier, Professor James Robinson, a professor at the University of Chicago and the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, expressed delight at visiting Abia State. He said he looked forward to discussions on Nigeria’s development challenges, Governor Otti’s reform agenda and areas where academic collaboration could contribute to practical policy solutions.
Also speaking, Professor Leander Heldring of Northwestern University said the prosperity of nations depends largely on the quality of their institutions and the choices made by their people. He commended the developmental strides and reforms being implemented by the Otti administration in Abia State.
In his remarks, Professor Chima Korie of Marquette University, who hails from Imo State, said the developmental progress recorded in Abia had inspired confidence among Nigerians, particularly those in the Diaspora. He noted that many Nigerians abroad are proud of Governor Otti’s transformation policies and programmes.
Leader of the delegation, Professor Ihechukwu Madubuike, said the visit was aimed at deepening Abia’s development model through research collaboration, policy advisory support, capacity building and stronger engagement with the global academic and policy community.
He described Abia under Governor Otti as a model of prudent economic management, noting that the administration’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, transparency, productivity and value for money aligns with the development principles championed by Professor Robinson.
Also, the President of the Abia Leadership Academy and former Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, said Professor Robinson’s scholarship had significantly influenced his academic career.
He added that the Abia Leadership Academy, established through an Executive Order by Governor Otti, is committed to producing ethical, empathetic and institution-focused leaders equipped to drive transformational leadership in Abia State and beyond.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, among other top government officials were present during the visit.
